9 CE, Teutoburg forest, Germania. 3 Roman legions under the poor leadership of Publius Quinctilius Varus were ambushed and wiped out by the Germanic chieftain Arminius. The competent legionaries must have suspected an ambush - unfortunately Varus was not one of them.
After learning of the defeat, emperor Augusts spent the next several weeks in a stupor, repeating the phrase "Quinctilius Varus, give me back my legions! The numbers XVII, XVIII & XIX were not used again by the Roman legions.
